Brigitte Merk is an award-winning artist based in Austria whose paintings have been exhibited internationally including in Austria, France, Israel, and the United States. Her compositions depict striking landscapes, and exotic animals, and explore relationships and movement through cubism, kineticism, and abstraction. Brigitte endeavors to create pieces that offer themselves as an oasis of calm for the eye where meaning unfolds, somewhere between reality and fantasy.
WILD BEGINNINGS
OIL CHALK
1943–1965
Inspired by European Modernists and her cultural heritage of the Viennese Art Nouveau, Brigitte's inner voice resonated through her oil chalk drawings.
In 1962, at an art competition hosted at Vienna's prestigious art school "Akademie am Schillerplatz", she was awarded first prize by renowned art educator Prof. Gerda Matejka-Felden. Her career was further propelled by the exhibition of "Stillleben in Ölkreide," at the Vienna Secession.
LOVE OF FAMILY
From 1965–1996, Brigitte put her passion for painting on pause
so to nurture her thriving family in Austria.
AQUARELLE
1996-2009
In 1996, after a 30-year-long creative break, Brigitte rekindled her painterly journey. Her technical and stylistic proficiency took a stronghold with the encouragement and guidance of her art mentors: Prof. Colnago for Aquarelle; Mag. Schnetzinger for oil painting; and Prof. Hübler, composition expert. Unsurprisingly, her self-confidence and exceptional perspectives reblossomed.
FINDING EDEN
GARDEN COMPOSITIONS
1999–2007
After receiving an abundance of recognition for her compositions, the time came to realize her lifelong dream and paint like the old masters, with the palette of oils she couldn't afford as a girl. Spurred by the vivid, peaceful, and abundant nature scenes she birthed, ensuing explorations would usher her into the boundless sphere of abstraction.
